• Don't forget about nighttime. Night communities are often different than day communities, so you should make an effort to make some observations at night. Traps can be very helpful for getting to know what comes out when you're gone.
• Here are instructions for a very simple pit trap for catching arthropods (insects, spiders, roly polies, etc.). It's basically just a cup, dug into the ground so that insects fall in. Here's a slightly more complicated trap, with an overhanging ledge to trick critters who like to hide under things.
